Are the French generous?
In times of inflation, energy crisis and uncertainty do French households remain generous toward one another?
58.6% of them give to charities. Yet strong disparities appear according to age, profession and location - none in terms of gender.
* More than 3/4 of the 18-24 year-olds donate whereas less than half of the 50-64 year-olds do.
* Self-employed and senior managers are the ones who give the most (67.7% vs 44.3% of workers).
* 63.2% of inhabitants of large cities (100,000+) donate vs 51.1% in smaller cities (<2000 inhabitants).
* Inhabitants of Ile-de-France appear to be the most generous (2/3 of them).
Let's now take a closer look at the causes chosen by the French population in terms of charity donations.
#1: Charities helping people in a difficult situation (poverty, disability, illness) are favoured by the whole population at 19.8% and especially by the 18-24 year-olds (27.1%).
#2: Animal protection: 17.1%. The younger generation outnumber the older. 29.6% of 18-24 year-olds and 30.4% of 25-34 year-olds pick this cause vs only 11.4% of 50-64 year-olds and 11.9% of those over 65.
#3: Non-financial donations (clothing, furniture, food, etc.): 16.1%. This cause appeal more women than men (20% vs 11.7%). We also note that older people are more represented (22.3%) here.
Another finding is the generational differentiation regarding donations to environmental protection causes. While 22.9% of the 18-24 year-olds and 16.6% of the 25-34 year-olds donate to this cause only 7.2% of 50-64 year-olds and 4.7% of 65+ year-olds do so. This significant gap echoes the current state of affairs and the commitment of the younger generation to the environment.
As for religious charities they do get less support from the French.
And what about the amount of donations?
Unsurprisingly the donation amount varies according to the occupation and the age group and thus the income.
* 1-49€: 2/3 of 18-24 year-olds and 59.7% of the 25-34
* 50-499€: 2/3 of 65+
* 500+€: 6.4% of 65+
Executives and self-employed are significantly more likely to donate between €100 and €249 with almost 1/3 of them.
