The 2-wheeled vehicle market: an electric shift in France?
Motorbikes, electric scooters, bicycles, electric kick scooters and other two-wheeled vehicles are doing well despite supply problems. But are the French interested in their electric models?
Not really, according to the results of our study. More than ¾ of the interviewed French people do not plan to buy an electric 2-wheeler in the next 2 years. A more than measured enthusiasm!
Let's focus on the 24.3% of French people most inclined to buy an electric 2-wheeler. Who are they?
- A majority of men overall (58%)
- 30.2% are between 35-49 years old and 20.8% between 18-24 years old
- More than a third of them (38.1%) are employees/intermediate professions
- These French people live in cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants
And which two-wheeled vehicle is most popular with these French people?
- The bicycle comes out on top (57.5%), far ahead of the electric kick scooter (27.8%). The gap then widens with the electric scooter (14.3%) and the motorbike (12.3%). Hoverboards and gyropods lag behind (5.1%)
Unsurprisingly, the size of the city plays a major role in the intention to buy these machines. In cities with less than 2,000 inhabitants, only 17.2% of people plan to buy one, compared to 26.9% of inhabitants of cities with 100,000 or more.
Nevertheless, there are significant differences between the age groups of those intending to buy this type of vehicle. Indeed, 40.9% of 18-24 year olds are considering the purchase of an electric kick scooter, which is in first place in this age group. The other older categories place the bicycle at the top of the list (57.3% among 35-49 year olds and 90.9% among those aged 65 and over).
Cycling is the number one choice for all categories, although there are significant differences, ranging from 37.7% for blue-collar workers to 66.6% for the non-working population. Interestingly, among the non-working population, electric scooters are largely under-represented (3%), to the benefit of other machines such as hoverboards and gyropods (9.7%).
In terms of geographical areas, the majority of electric bicycles are used in the South-West and the West (>70%). Conversely, in the North, they represent only 37.5% and give up their yellow jersey in favour of the electric kick scooter (44.3%).
